Far West Fungi owners John and Toby Garrone brought a fantastic variety of mushrooms and guided the salon attendees through the mushroom cultivation process.

I used to hate mushrooms as a kid, except on pizza. I never pictured myself at a mushroom salon, but the event was incredible.

Afreen Wahab, of Cuisine Afreen, held a mushroom salon – an evening of mushroom discovery, cooking, and tasting, in her home in San Francisco last week. Far West Fungi owners John and Toby Garrone brought boxes of mushrooms, Afreen cooked, and we all enjoyed conversation and a glass or two of well paired wine.

Barley and Hops – Occidental Restaurant Photographer

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

Jen and I went to Barley and Hops, a great little restaurant in Occidental, CA, which is in west Sonoma County. This is the red snapper sandwich

My grandfather, at dinner.

The Easy Leaves were playing some music - the bar's a little cramped, so we listened from outside.

My dad and my cousin.

Jen and I explored the town a bit, and checked out Negri's, which was supposed to have karaoke, but we came back to Barley and Hops for the music.

Mom and dad dancing.

Gymkhana – Willits Frontier Days Photographer

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

I went up to Willits a few weeks ago to shoot a Gymkhana, a rodeo event.

This is the daughter of my former boss at the Wente Scout Reservation and her close friend.

The light here in this small town is really nice.

I love how shooting into the sun fits with a rodeo.

The textures and dust at these events are really terrific to photograph and challenging to do well.

This is one of my favorite portraits in a while.

A commemorative Willits Frontier Days belt buckle, and a prize ribbon.

Maker Faire – San Mateo – San Mateo Event Photographer

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Erin helps a young Maker Faire attendee use the Toontastic program on one of the company's iPads.

ToonTastic is a global storytelling resource for kids - an absolutely brilliant idea.

The Maker Faire is a confluence of people who make things in the Bay Area.

This kid was putting taken pieces away nicely in a row; the robot just dropped them in a box. But it was winning.

Last-minute preparations for a combat robot competition.

Erin and Andy are getting married in Yosemite this month. In lieu of a traditional engagement session, we agreed that it might be fun and good style-aligning practice for me to come and shoot at the San Mateo Maker Faire, at which one of Andy’s projects, ToonTastic, was to have a booth. I had a blast shooting this – it was similar to an assignment that I might get for the paper, but I had a lot more freedom to shoot things that I liked.
